I chose this printer based on price, customer reviews, and ink cost, plus I've been printing all my black-white copies with a Brother laser printer. I'm female and setup was easy. It's fax-capable, wireless-capable, and can print from a cellphone app, but I do not use those features for now. I used a USB cable for better reliability (if my internet service hiccups, I can still print, wheee!). The location of the USB input was inside this printer, a bit weird but perhaps they were thinking if I tripped on the cord, the only damage would be to me versus the print job :) A nice surprise during setup is the location of the ink cartridges: they are the easiest-to-access of any printer I've owned, right in front! I do mostly matte-type color printing for cartoon-y color posters, flannelboard figures, and fancy nametags. I'm thrilled with the color quality (as compared to my Canon MG5320 that developed "terminal" issues), but since THE COLOR PRINTING IS INDEED SLOW (as all user reviews have indicated), I will have to finish printing projects sooner and begin printing them sooner in order to meet my deadlines. BLACK-WHITE PRINTING IS FASTER than the color printing by far with this printer. I like all the print job adjustments and pre-set choices built into this printer. I print photos once a year and will see how it handles semi-gloss. I like that I can adjust scan resolution, as I was stuck with a default setting with my previous Canon model. For higher resolution, I had to use my HP4010 slide scanner - a bit of a hassle. Here's another "quirk:" in the middle of a job (example: ten 8x11 matte color prints) this printer pauses for a cooldown. This means I need to allow more time for print jobs in case if this occurs, which is OK with me, but perhaps not OK with someone considering to purchase this printer. It has an ink save mode for printing that is worthless; however, the only time I need that feature is for black ink, and I do not use this printer for B/W printing. I will revise this review if problems develop with this printer.

After our local computer center recommended this Brother printer we purchased it. We had problems connecting it to our Apple iPhones, iPad and mini iPad. The problem was these devices could be wirelessly connected and I could successfully print from each device. When I tried to print later in the day from these devices each device would have to search for the printer and when it couldn't find it I received a message stating that no airprinter could be found. I removed the brother app and reloaded it again on each device, no luck. All devices and the printer were on the same network. I then contacted Brother via email and received instructions as well as calling Brother and speaking to someone in your software department. Followed those instructions. The same thing happened. I could connect to the devices but then lost the connection. I tried to connect them manually using thr IP address. No luck. I know the printer is working as it prints from our desk top and lap top wirelessly with no problem. I had our computer person come out to the house to see what I was doing wrong. He disconnected, unloaded and started all over again. Same problem. I have no idea what to do next other than purchase another printer that is comparable with Apple products and will allow me to print from any Apple device from anywhere in our home without having to reconnect the wireless connection.

Comments about Brother Work Smart MFC-J460DW Inkjet Multifunction Printer - Color - Plain Paper Print - Desktop:

I only use the unit for home but can see it would be of great benefit in the office also. Unit was packaged very well, set up took only a few moments and the unit was up and running. I have had older models but enjoy the wireless feature of this one. I have used it almost daily for 3 months, no problems or glitches. Highly recommend this unit for home or office.

We've only had this printer a couple of months but it has served our basic needs well. The little plastic part that slides out to hold the printed page seems flimsy but we haven't had any problems with it.

Comments about Brother Work Smart MFC-J460DW Inkjet Multifunction Printer - Color - Plain Paper Print - Desktop:

It works great. I'm a little disappointed in some of the print-outs: the colors are darker than what's on the monitor. I have not copied or faxed as yet.

I've had this printer for a few months now and I really like it! Prints come out very good, and I am particularly impressed with the scanner. I scanned several very old photos and they almost came out better than the originals! I'm still using the ink that came with the printer too!

Finally a printer that does what you tell it to do. A printer that you don't need an engineering degree to set up. Any where in the house, one touch, i can print it. Reliable, and Brother has thought of everything. No more HP's, Canons, or Epsons. And no more stress, at least from my printer, thx for creating such an enjoyable product that any fool should be able to operate.

Cartridge Comparison Guide
  • Cartridge Types
  • Ink & Toner Basics
  • Number of Pages & Shelf Life
Cartridge Type
Genuine or OEM (Original) Cartridges Remanufactured Cartridges Compatible Cartridges
Description OEM stands for original equipment manufacturer, meaning the cartridge was made by the same company that made your printer. Original brand cartridges are very reliable and sometimes the only option if your printer is new to market or uncommon. Remanufactured ink is a genuine brand cartridge that has gone through one cycle of use. After use, the cartridge is recycled, acquired by a remanufacturing facility and put through a rigorous professional refurbishing process. During the refurbishing process the cartridge is disassembled, thoroughly cleaned and tested for quality. It's then carefully refilled, tested again and brought back to life. Buying remanufactured prevents one less cartridge from ending up in a landfill. A compatible cartridge is a brand new ink cartridge built by a manufacturer other than your printer. It's like buying the generic version of the genuine brand. Most are uniquely designed to differentiate from genuine cartridges. Despite any structural difference you may notice, the cartridge will still fit in your machine and print a full yield, just like the original brand.
Price Factors Many printer manufacturers follow the razor-and-blades business model which may result in higher priced genuine cartridges. Remanufactured ink is much cheaper than the original brand ink. It's far more cost effective to refurbish a previously used cartridge than create a new OEM from scratch. Compatible ink is much cheaper than the original brand. Compatible suppliers don't have to worry about the additional costs that hinder OEMs like new printers or firmware, which lets them keep prices low.
Quality Original cartridges work extremely well and are covered under a warranty by the printer manufacturer High quality remanufactured ink will match the quality of the original, but not all remanufactured ink is created equal. Make sure you buy from a reputable supplier in order to get the absolute best results. High quality compatible ink will match the quality of the original, but not all compatible ink is created equal. Make sure you buy from a reputable supplier in order to get the absolute best results.
What's the difference between ink and toner cartridges?
Ink Cartridges Toner Cartridges
Printer Type Work with inkjet printers Work with laser printers
Material Liquid ink Dry powder
How it works Inkjet printers use a series of nozzles that spray tiny drops of ink directly on the print suface Laser toner printers use static electricity and heat to bond dry toner powder to a page
Commonly used by Casual home users, small business and photographers Large businesses and schools
Number of Pages You Can Print A cartridge's page yield is the estimated number of pages you can print. Page yield is based on 5% page coverage. This means that the quoted page yield is based upon printed pages where only 5% of the page has been imprinted with ink. For example, a short memo has approximately 5% coverage. If you have a cartridge that has a yield of 500 pages, it can print 500 pages of that short memo. If you are printing letters, photos or graphics, your coverage will vary greatly and your page yield will drop significantly.
Cartridge Warranty and Shelf Life Most ink and toner cartridges include a warranty or "best by" date on their box. Remanufactured and compatible ink cartridges can last 12-18 months unopened, and toner cartridges can last up to 3 years.
Cartridge Care and Storage Only open a cartridge when you need it. Opened cartridges will eventually dry out, especially if the protective tape or clip has been removed. If you have an open ink cartridge around and would like to try and prevent it from drying out, place it nozzle side up in a plastic airtight tub. If your cartridge came with protective tape or a clip reapply both before storing. Place a damp cloth or paper towel in the tub, next to the cartridge and keep it stored in a cool, dark place.
