Printing on 4x6 labels was something my regular ink jet printer was assigned to do until I got the 4XL...The labels from the ink jet were not waterproof, and it was always a hassle loading the label sheets. Now, the 4XL is assigned to all the USPS, DHL, UPS printing tasks and it does an amazing job...the labels are waterproof, highly durable, and the printing is hi-res quality.

This is my third Labelwriter; the other two became obsolete due to OS changes. This one has poor software and a serious manufacturing flaw, no ON/OFF switch. The software is difficult to learn; even the elementary distinction between a new address in a file and a new label type is obscure. The data import feature is extremely limited as it won't even import old LaberWriter files. The third-party postage stamp purveyor (En----a) has dismal software to drive its Dashboard Widget. There is no way to stop a charge to a postal account if the printer fails to actually print the stamps. The absence of an on/off switch is unforgiveable, but the charges for postage that failed to print are purely fraudulent. The software warns the uset to have enough labels on the roll to satisfy the order, but it doesn't say anything about a possible I/O error between the computer and the printer. I won't print more than one-at-a-time from now on when printing postage. The rolls of dymo stamp and label forms are shipped with a little adhesive sticker to hold down the end of the roll. When you remove the sticker it leaves a little adhesive residue on the first stamp or label in the roll, and on the label immediately under it. Imagine what happens when that sticky residue hits the printer platen on the first print job for that roll! Right: a bunch of accordian-folded labels, unstuck from their backing paper and jamming the printer. How many labels or stamps you lose in this event is purely up to how big a wad of paper it takes to stop the printer, since there is no OFF switch. Sure, you can throw the main circuit breaker for the house, but you'll never get (En----a) to understand that the printer didn't actually print all the stamps the computer said it sent to the printer.

Doesn't work with Mac

By bkponi

Comments about Dymo LabelWriter 4XL Direct Thermal Printer - Monochrome - Desktop - Label Print:

I've had this labeler for about 5 months. The software it comes with doesn't work. You have to download a new driver. After fussing with it for awhile I got it to work. Then I put it away for several weeks. When I tried to use it again. It no longer worked. I call customer service. They told me to download a particular driver (now I have three). It finally started working again. Just pulled it out again after a couple of months. Software is not longer working. I can print black labels but can't type anything on the label. I even tried downloading new software. Still nothing. The company doesn't seem to put many resources into supporting Mac. Time to move on.

DO NOT BUY - BATTERY ISSUE

By Product is now trash

Comments about Dymo LabelWriter 4XL Direct Thermal Printer - Monochrome - Desktop - Label Print:

I have barely used this device but the expensive proprietary battery is dead. Also the device intermittently shows up and then disappears, probably battery related again. Nice overall concept, really poor, poor engineering. I will never buy another product from this company it's a waste of money

Poor battery design

By Alex45

Comments about Dymo LabelWriter 4XL Direct Thermal Printer - Monochrome - Desktop - Label Print:

The printer doesn't work without battery. Despite the fact that it's connected to the PC USB port and it's powered on. If the battery dies, you'll have to spend more than 50% of the total costs to buy a new battery. A no-go.

Does not work well with Macs!

By Casper

from Phoenix, AZ, United States

Comments about Dymo LabelWriter 4XL Direct Thermal Printer - Monochrome - Desktop - Label Print:

Item does not work well with Macs - downloaded all new software from DYMO website and still nothing. Software will not recognize printer and just queues print jobs. Read several other reviews online about a possible fix (unplug and let it sit for 5 mins, then try again) but it didn't work for me after several attempts. Apparently there is a design-flaw with the plugin and it is extremely finicky. I don't have time to deal with a device that is that troublesome. Returned this one and trying another handheld product that does not need a computer.

Frustration and Heartburn

This thing never works when you plug it in. It pops up goes away pops up again you click the software, a 30 second job turns in to 2 hours of googling. I could print labels faster with a hammer and chisel.

I liked it, now I need to replace the battery...

By sbsjsu

Comments about Dymo LabelWriter 4XL Direct Thermal Printer - Monochrome - Desktop - Label Print:

I ordered the LabelManger PnP in February 2015 along with labels, but didn't use the unit until September 2015 when I discovered that the labels that I purchased were not for this unit. Beware that not everything that says "D1" is for this label maker. Although that's what is stamped inside of the machine, that is not the model number. Look for LabelManager PnP labels. On to the labels... it took several attempts to figure out how to print from an Excel spreadsheet, but I finally nailed it down. I love not having to manually enter each label, but I was not expecting it to be so complicated. I couldn't explain the process to someone else if I tried. Oh, and one thing I haven't figured out is printing multiple times from the same file. If you are in Import Data and Print, once you hit print, you have to go into Import Data and Print again if there are other labels that you needed to print on a different color tape, for example. The Import window closes and you have to start again. And, then there's the battery... In August 2016, my unit stopped working. I tried a new USB cord and a new USB port. Then, I read the reviews and started to hunt for a battery. The rechargeable battery is listed at approximately 50-60% of the cost of the printer. In retrospect, it was not the wisest label printer choice I could have made. Now to decide if I should buy a new label maker or buy a battery. Dymo, is there a way to make the battery last longer than 1 year?

Can't make it work

By termsheet

Comments about Dymo LabelWriter 4XL Direct Thermal Printer - Monochrome - Desktop - Label Print:

As others have reported, I can't get it to work right out to the box. The software of the mac was super easy to use but it has a winding problem with the included tape and the letters are supersized and don't fit on the included tape

Comments about Dymo LabelWriter 4XL Direct Thermal Printer - Monochrome - Desktop - Label Print:

I bought this a couple of years ago. It's a great little label printer until the battery dies, and it will die. Then nothing works. I've bought a new battery at vast expense (nearly as much as a new printer) but it seems to have trouble charging. I used to recommend this until I had the battery problems, now I don't.
