As a long-time math teacher, I always wanted to give my kids papers that were already punched and ready to put into their binders. So having a good hole punch has been a high priority for me. This is the best punch I've ever had, and well worth the investment. It's a quality piece of equipment, rugged enough to keep working for years, and it punches cleanly every time.

When paying more doesn't get you quality workmanship

By Collyns

from Pleasantville, NY

Comments about Swingline Three-Hole Punch:

This is my second Swingline Lever Handle Heavy Duty punch and this one broke just like my first. While this feels very sturdy and is made of heavy metal, it breaks fairly easily which you don't expect out of a fairly simple piece of machinery. The arm locks up and the mechanism stops releasing so it is stuck where two of the heads are not going back up. You can only slide about one sheet of paper in at a time making this just about useless to operate. I am very disappointed in product. You don't mind paying a little more to get something that lasts but in this case, I'd be better off getting a cheap punch and replacing every few years.

Does not deserve the Swingline brand name.

By Rickey

from Corpus Christi, TX, USA

Comments about Swingline Three-Hole Punch:

I have always liked Swingline products. I am disappointed in the heavy duty punch. The bottom tray does not stay connected very well. I seem to always have dots all over my office from it falling off and scattering the chads. The paper stops move, twist, and fall off constantly. And, the center hole "floats" in the punch state and slowly rotates and falls into the "static" no-punch state. The mechanism works very smooth. It is just these three things that need some re-design.

Since there is no where to ask this question on your website, How can we replace the bottom, rubber catcher? Ours is tearing up and we use these in several units of our hospital.

Good punching capability - terrible overall quality

By disappointed1

from Houston, TX

Comments about Swingline Three-Hole Punch:

I have had this punch for 4 years. When I first got it, it was wonderful. I deal with tons of paper/documents for a living, and I enjoyed the changeable margin paper guides, even though they weren't the best quality, and the flimsy hole catcher on the bottom didn't bother me because the punch stayed in one place most of the time. Then, we moved offices and I have hated this punch ever since. First, I had a need to move the punch from time to time (not even frequently). The tray on the bottom began to fall off 50% of the time, requiring me to empty it after every use or end up with paper punches everywhere. Then I started noticing the holes being askew, only to learn that one of the two paper guides had gotten lost in the move, so now the one remaining guide was putting everything off. Imagine my dismay when I scoured the internet, office product sites, and the Swingline site itself, only to realize that replacements cannot be found anywhere. This hole punch is officially a paper weight, and I have no plans to replace it with another. There are much more user-friendly and higher-quality options out there. It is worth a few extra dollars to have a product that actually gets the job done.

Durable and smooth

Comments about Swingline Three-Hole Punch:

Swingline's hole puncher is high grade durable and very smooth and easy to operate. I no longer have to struggle to punch holes in a fairly large pack of papers. Excellent product.

Works, but could be better

By knife63

from Boise, ID, USA

Comments about Swingline Three-Hole Punch:

I use this punch constantly and it is very heavy-duty; no worries about it breaking. However the holes fill up quickly with paper rather than falling trhough into the clean-out as they should and then I have manually dig them out with a letter opener. Also, the stops are not permanent and can be lost easily and if they fall out it is confusing to tell what way to put them back.

Cartridge Comparison Guide
  • Cartridge Types
  • Ink & Toner Basics
  • Number of Pages & Shelf Life
Cartridge Type
Genuine or OEM (Original) Cartridges Remanufactured Cartridges Compatible Cartridges
Description OEM stands for original equipment manufacturer, meaning the cartridge was made by the same company that made your printer. Original brand cartridges are very reliable and sometimes the only option if your printer is new to market or uncommon. Remanufactured ink is a genuine brand cartridge that has gone through one cycle of use. After use, the cartridge is recycled, acquired by a remanufacturing facility and put through a rigorous professional refurbishing process. During the refurbishing process the cartridge is disassembled, thoroughly cleaned and tested for quality. It's then carefully refilled, tested again and brought back to life. Buying remanufactured prevents one less cartridge from ending up in a landfill. A compatible cartridge is a brand new ink cartridge built by a manufacturer other than your printer. It's like buying the generic version of the genuine brand. Most are uniquely designed to differentiate from genuine cartridges. Despite any structural difference you may notice, the cartridge will still fit in your machine and print a full yield, just like the original brand.
Price Factors Many printer manufacturers follow the razor-and-blades business model which may result in higher priced genuine cartridges. Remanufactured ink is much cheaper than the original brand ink. It's far more cost effective to refurbish a previously used cartridge than create a new OEM from scratch. Compatible ink is much cheaper than the original brand. Compatible suppliers don't have to worry about the additional costs that hinder OEMs like new printers or firmware, which lets them keep prices low.
Quality Original cartridges work extremely well and are covered under a warranty by the printer manufacturer High quality remanufactured ink will match the quality of the original, but not all remanufactured ink is created equal. Make sure you buy from a reputable supplier in order to get the absolute best results. High quality compatible ink will match the quality of the original, but not all compatible ink is created equal. Make sure you buy from a reputable supplier in order to get the absolute best results.
What's the difference between ink and toner cartridges?
Ink Cartridges Toner Cartridges
Printer Type Work with inkjet printers Work with laser printers
Material Liquid ink Dry powder
How it works Inkjet printers use a series of nozzles that spray tiny drops of ink directly on the print suface Laser toner printers use static electricity and heat to bond dry toner powder to a page
Commonly used by Casual home users, small business and photographers Large businesses and schools
Number of Pages You Can Print A cartridge's page yield is the estimated number of pages you can print. Page yield is based on 5% page coverage. This means that the quoted page yield is based upon printed pages where only 5% of the page has been imprinted with ink. For example, a short memo has approximately 5% coverage. If you have a cartridge that has a yield of 500 pages, it can print 500 pages of that short memo. If you are printing letters, photos or graphics, your coverage will vary greatly and your page yield will drop significantly.
Cartridge Warranty and Shelf Life Most ink and toner cartridges include a warranty or "best by" date on their box. Remanufactured and compatible ink cartridges can last 12-18 months unopened, and toner cartridges can last up to 3 years.
Cartridge Care and Storage Only open a cartridge when you need it. Opened cartridges will eventually dry out, especially if the protective tape or clip has been removed. If you have an open ink cartridge around and would like to try and prevent it from drying out, place it nozzle side up in a plastic airtight tub. If your cartridge came with protective tape or a clip reapply both before storing. Place a damp cloth or paper towel in the tub, next to the cartridge and keep it stored in a cool, dark place.
