Best Printers to Use with Compatible Ink

It’s no secret that most genuine brand cartridges are overpriced.  No matter what printer you decide to buy, there’s a good chance that the printer cartridge that comes with it will eventually cost more than the machine.  So how do you get reliable prints without overspending?  The solution is easy: choose compatible ink cartridges from a reputable source. You’ll get reliable print performance for a fraction of the original brand price. To help you get started, here are a few recommended printer / ink pairings and printer / toner pairings based off of our top-selling printer cartridges so that you get the most value for your money.

  • My MX920 printer has stopped letting use other Non-Oem cartridges. I was using one brand for over a year, then an update from Canon stopped me in my tracks. I tried another supplier, but same result.

Will you Canon PGI and CGI cartridges work in my printer?

  • I purchased an Epson XP-830 in March of last year. After about 6 months, I noticed the prices rising on the OEM 410 series cartridges. I saw the LD after-market cartridges on Amazon, and gave them a try. They’ve been a very good alternative.

Now, due to an unsuspecting firmware update, I’m getting “cartridge not recognized” errors, and will no longer be able to use the LD cartridges. Apparently there’s no way to roll-back the firmware update.

I’ll have to buy some OEM cartridges tomorrow, to finish up some work, but wonder which manufacturer is the best for the “non-OEM” cartridge world, as this article is from 2016. Any assistance would be appreciated.

    • Hi Al,

I am sorry you are having trouble with those Epson 410XL ink cartridges. There is some quick troubleshooting you can do to try and get them working, usually a hard reset will do the trick: Uninstall the printer cartridges, power down the printer and unplug it from the wall. Then, plug the printer back in, power it back up and reinstall the cartridges. This should get the cartridges up and running again. If not, they are backed by a lifetime guarantee, and if you get in touch with our customer service team, we would be happy to get a replacement set out to you. You can call us at 888-321-2552 or send us an email at [email protected]. If you are still in the market for a new color inkjet printer, the HP OfficeJet Pro 6968 we mention here is a good option. The printer uses four color ink cartridges just like your Epson XP-830 and the cartridges actually offer a slightly better page yield too. Hope this helps!

  • LD generic ink cartridges for my Brother printer are the best I’ve ever used. Your customer service is very good. Most other generic manufacturers do not have any customer service. I looked around for a review site but couldn’t find one. You may offer my review if you can find one.

  • Hello,

I’m trying to locate a new MFC-L2740DW at the price you mentioned or below, but so far I haven’t been able to. Can you tell me whether the Brother MFC-L2750DW will accept and work well with one of your LD cartridges, and if so what cartridge number and price?

If not, I’ll keep searching for the 2740.

  • Your cartridges wont work in HP inkjet printers, so I’d like a refund. and HP is the worst company in america

    • What cartridges were they, Bud?

  • HP6968 quit accepting my LD cartridges.. They worked great, but now HP has blocked them..

    • Hi Dave! This is because they updated the printer firmware for your 6968. Give us a call and we’ll replace it with cartridges with an updated chip that works on your printer. I’m sorry for this hiccup but give us a call and we’ll gladly get you some updated cartridges soon as possible.

  • I recently purchased three No. 96 cartridges for my HP6940 printer. I installed the 1st one and it worked for about a week. The next one won’t work at all. I’m afraid to open the 3rd one for fear they will dry out before I have the opportunity to use them. I have unplugged multiple times. I have disconnected from PC and uninstalled/reinstalled printer. Now what? Any way these cartridges aren’t useless to me?

    • Hello, Sue. Is there a printer error message that pops up when you try printing or does you always get an empty page when you try printing something? Does the printer alert you of an empty cartridge even when you just installed a new one? Learning more about what you’re experiencing will help us figure out what could be wrong with the cartridges or the printer.

  • No error message, just the empty cartridge idiot light on the printer. Printer does print composite with only color cartridge (also purchased from you previously) installed. When try to insert black cartridges, empty cartridge light blinks and will not print at all. It’s really aggravating to use all my color ink for primarily black text only pages though. 🙁

    • Hi Sue, it sounds like it is an issue with the printer cartridges. I would recommend cleaning the contacts on the cartridge (gold dots on the side) with a lint-free cloth and then reinstall and try to print again. If that doesn’t work you may have a faulty cartridge, which can happen from time to time. If it is faulty, we’d be happy to get replacement cartridges out to you. Please give our customer service department a call at 888-321-2552 or send us an email and we can set up a reship for you. I will leave a note on your account that you reached out to us on the blog.

  • I have two Samsung M2020 printers. Both have the firmware updated, and I can’t justify the expense of new cartridges from Samsung just because they stopped me from using generic cartridges in them. So the printers are in my trash pile. Do you sell compatible toner cartridges that will work with the “updated” firmware? If so, how much do they cost? Thanks, Rodger

  • Haven’t tried your inks yet, have bought other generics for my two HP and one Epson printers, but came to your site looking for compatible printers & inks. Why are they allowed to stop us using other inks than their own? If it’s the warranties, then they only need to cancel the warranty – I couldn’t care less about a warranty for a $30-40 printer. One HP comes out with blank sheets and the Epson has irregular bars across the pages so 2 out of 3 are not working and the other one has HP inks installed.

    • Hi Rod! They aren’t allowed to do that but perhaps manufacturers don’t want it to be easy for consumers to use compatibles on their machine. That’s only my take on it though. But IMO if the price difference is dramatic, it only makes sense to use a product that’s effective and more affordable even if there are a few hoops I may need to jump through to get it to work.

  • I have a question – my Epson AIO printer xp440 was using re manufactured ink cartridges until the Epson firmware update. Now it shows them as Epson cartridges but will not recognize them or print. My question is do you have cartridges with updated chips in 288XL. I tried to reset the printer but it didn’t work.

    • Hi Pam! I believe I can help you out on this. Please email me at [email protected].

  • I have several LD cartridges that will not work in my XP400, which I am reading is caused by firmware up dates. Can you help?

    • Absolutely! Please email me at [email protected] so I can assist you further.

  • My epson wf2750 worked great with the LD220xl cartridges until my firmware automatically updated and now it no longer recognizes the magenta cartridge. Is there a fix for this? I have several unopened ink cartridges. Otherwise I’ll invest in a new printer but it certainly won’t be another epson.

    • Hi Janet,

I am sorry you had a firmware issue with the 220XL magenta cartridge. This is the first I’ve heard of a firmware issue with that particular cartridge series! There was a known issue with the Epson 212XL series earlier this year but nothing for the 220XLs. What kind of error message were you getting on the printer display screen? If you haven’t done so already, I would try one of the other magenta cartridges from your bundle order to see if that works. Your LD cartridges are backed by a Lifetime guarantee. If the cartridges don’t end up working, we can get replacements out to you or provide you with a refund, so there is no risk to try a second cartridge. I would also recommend turning off the automatic firmware updates to protect your LD cartridges from future potential firmware updates. We show you how in this article here: https://support.ldproducts.com/hc/en-us/articles/360024010133-How-to-Turn-Off-Epson-firmware-updates. Let me know how it goes and we can proceed from there, thanks!!

  • Hi,
I was using my hp 8610 and I ran out of blue ink. I replaced it with 3rd party ink as I had been doing it for the past 2 years without a problem but now, my printer is not working :(. I already had tried two set of brand new ink from two different companies and the printer keeps showing me the message that the cartridges are damaged. I am about to give up and replace it. Any suggestions?

    • Hi Gladys,

I am sorry you are having trouble with those third-party printer cartridges. You might try cleaning the gold contact points on the side of the cartridge with a lint-free cloth to get them working properly. Sometimes fingerprint oil or dust can get on those connection points and cause a faulty reading in your printer. You can also try doing a hard reset on the printer: with the cartridges installed, power down the printer and unplug it from the wall for about a minute, then plug it back in, power it back up and try printing again. If that does not work, you may just have a faulty cartridge, which can happen from time to time. If the company that you got it from has a warranty, I recommend asking for a replacement cartridge and testing that. Hope this helps!

  • Hi Eric,

I turned off the automatic firmware update and tried a new magenta cartridge after that before contacting you. I still get the “m cartridge not recognized. This started mid January. The magenta cartridge that gave the original message had bee working fine the boom. I would gladly exchange the magenta cartridges, but fear my other cartridges black and blue cartridges might end up with the same problem and I’m getting desperate for a printer. Thanks for your help.

    • Hi Janet, I’ve looped our customer service department into your issue and I’m working with them to get some replacement cartridges out to you to test as soon as possible. Again this is the first time I’ve heard of a firmware issue with these cartridges. It could also just be a faulty cartridge, which can happen, but it’s pretty rare. Replacements should solve the problem, thank you for your patience!

    • Hi Janet,

Our customer service tried calling you to confirm your shipping address before we send out the replacements but the phone number we have on file is disconnected. Please send me an email at [email protected] to confirm your shipping address, if you like we can update your phone number too, and we will get the cartridges out today. Thanks so much and I apologize for the delay!!

  • What printers work well with 952 and 952XL? I have a HP Officejet Pro 8710. Since the most recent update, our remanufactured cartridges won’t work. I have 4 brand new cartridges so I think it would be cheaper to find a new printer that is compatible.

    • Hi Ashley, HP released a firmware update that blocked some compatible cartridges from working in their printers on March 17th, which may explain why those cartridges are not working for you. Even if you bought a new printer that works with the 952s, you would likely still run into firmware issues. HP released a corrective update on March 27th and if you have that update installed, your cartridges should work again. You can download the specific firmware update for your 8710 on the HP printer support page. We have our own support page that explains how to do that here: https://support.ldproducts.com/hc/en-us/articles/360046207273-Corrective-Firmware-Download-for-HP-952XL-Printers.

To avoid any future potential issues with HP firmware updates, we recommend turning off the automatic firmware updates on your printer. This will allow your compatible cartridges to continue to work without interruption. We show you how to turn off HP firmware updates here: https://support.ldproducts.com/hc/en-us/articles/360025393933-How-do-I-turn-off-HP-firmware-updates-

Hope this helps and please let us know if you have any questions!!

  • I have a Canon PIXMA TS6120 that no longer accepts your compatible inks I’ve used for years or those of other manufacturers. How do I turn off the auto firmware updates on my printer?

  • I am in the UK, I PRINT HUNDREDS OF A4 PHOTOS OF NATURE, DRAGONFLIES, LICHEN, MUSHROOMS ETC.
at the end of the winter, I throw out the old photos and start again.
I had an Epson WF 2650, it was great took compatible inks so my hobby was cheap until it wasn’t.
I can’t find a cheap printer that takes compatible inks.
    Anyone any ideas?

    • Hi Carol, if you are printing hundreds of photos, you might consider an Epson Ecotank printer. It uses ink bottles instead of ink cartridges and compatible versions are available for most models, which makes them super cost effective.

  • I have an older HP P1606dn printer that used to work great with compatible toner cartridges, however lately I haven’t been able to find anything at all that works and isn’t flagged for my ‘protection’ whenever I print anything. I’m about ready to pitch it in the trash, since I refuse to pay HP prices for original toner. Do you have anything that will for sure work with that printer?

    • Hi Kelly, you can find our compatible toner cartridges for your HP P1606dn printer here: https://www.ldproducts.com/HP/Compatible/Laser-Toner/Black/CE278A/27193-Product.html. They should work great and they are backed by a lifetime guarantee. Hope this helps!

    • Kelly, HP settled a law suit for doing exactly what you are describing. Sadly, the settlement closed in March, so it’s too late for the rest of us to join that one. Tell everyone you know about your experience with HP. It’s the only way to make them change, and to save others from the same fate.

  • Which AIO laser printer usually works best with your toner refills. I seem to have the most issues with hp when it comes to trying to use anything but OME. I am wanting to buy a new printer under $400 if possible (up to $500 if it is worth it).

  • Looking to be a new all in one inkjet printer that uses individual color cartridges. I want one that will accept aftermarket cartridges at purchase. I never accept software updates because that’s how they get you.

  • I have a Samsung Xpress C480FW. In the window I am receiving two new messages. One says need Fuser Unit the other says need Transfer belt unit. In anticipation with my work, I have 9 toner cartridges. Two for each color and one for black. They all start with CLT prior to _ 404S. The cost for the new parts is $284.90 and I am starting to think that maybe it is time to buy a new printer but I dont know what other printer might take the same ink toner cartridges. Can anyone help me with this question.

  • I have a Brother 3170 and 3230 and neither will work with generic cartridges. I tried all I can think of and it’s confusing because companies sell generic cartridges for these printers so there is bound to be a way to override the errors. A new set of Brother cartridges is $242 on Amazon and I can almost buy a new printer for that! I do know that if you have Brother cartridges for the 3230 you can swap out the new chip for the generic but what a hassle! Any ideas?

    • Generic cartridges should work with those printer models. We have toner cartridges for those. I will email you for more details.
