I've had this printer for a month and have used it to copy, print and scan. I haven't had any problems, which is most important to me. I'm not super tech-savvy, so I don't want a printer with lots of issues. When I've had to look up "how-to's" in the manual, it was simple to understand. One thing I appreciate a lot is how easy it is to scan. Getting our old HP to scan was painful if not impossible. I scanned using the menu on this brother printer screen and it couldn't be simpler.

I have mixed feelings about my MFC J885 printer. I bought it for use in my home office. It does some things well, and several things not so well. It does print my documents in color. I have to use this printer over a VPN which makes the print jobs very slow. That is not the fault of the printer. As far as a printer, it does very well â€" I love automatic two-sided printing, I love color. I also have to use the scanner. I am extremely well pleased with the scanner. The software took just a little bit of getting used to, but now I do things very well. The one thing I don't like the most about this printer is that it will not print from an iPhone or an iPad. When I originally set it up it would, but within the same day it quit. I have tried all sorts of things including re-installing the printer, but it doesn't seem to do any good. For that very reason, I would replace this printer. My other big complaint is about two sided printing, one page at a time. The manual sheet feeder and I have a to-do about once every workday. I don't know whether it's my technique or what but the Brother just doesn't like the way I put in the paper to print that second side. And, just to make it an even number, my third complaint is that this printer prints terrible color photos. You don't even need to try. I debated on two stars or three. As a printer, it deserves at three. But to be useful, I needed to work with Apple products and I need a more reliable manual sheet feeder. This is my third Brother printer. One is a laser printer, which cannot always be seen on the network. One is in MFC J825 which does everything I would like for it to do but, it resides in another state! And finally there's this printer. If I knew then what I know now, I would not have bought it.

Outstanding features

Comments about Brother Work Smart MFC-J885DW Inkjet Multifunction Printer - Color - Plain Paper Print - Desktop:

The OCR that goes into Excel and Text format is a standard feature and works quite well. Replacement inks are always expensive, but voiding the warranty is you do use 3rd party refills is ridiculous. Had a warranty claim due to scanner issue that was resolved quickly.

Prints okay, doesn't scan

Comments about Brother Work Smart MFC-J885DW Inkjet Multifunction Printer - Color - Plain Paper Print - Desktop:

The machine I have now is a refurbished replacement. It prints fine (usually, sometimes there's a wifi issue). It doesn't print colors true. It won't scan at all, saying that it doesn't recognize the computer. It recognizes it fine to print. No idea why it won't scan. Oh, and the stationery store around the corner doesn't carry the ink for Brother printers. Not does anyplace in my neighborhood close by.

Horrible color printing

By Tiffy

Comments about Brother Work Smart MFC-J885DW Inkjet Multifunction Printer - Color - Plain Paper Print - Desktop:

I'm happy with the printer except for printing of pictures. The colors look faded and are not sharp and crisp. I loved that the set up was easy peasy. I have not set up mobile printing yet.

For my purposes, it is a great printer. Two sided and the quality is good. Pictures I have printed have also come out great. Changing the ink is so simple and no problems.

The Brother printer is easy to use. The touch display is very intuitive. However, the print is not as bright as another brand, and I cannot tell how much paper is left until it runs out.

Excellent feature set

Comments about Brother Work Smart MFC-J885DW Inkjet Multifunction Printer - Color - Plain Paper Print - Desktop:

This multi function printer has much to recommend it. The feature that I had to have was the ability to print on CDs, but in addition, the unit's compact size, quiet operation and print quality have been top notch. I especially like the front loading ink cartridges, and also the scanner's multi-page scanner. I am happy that I purchased this MFC unit.

Cartridge Comparison Guide
  • Cartridge Types
  • Ink & Toner Basics
  • Number of Pages & Shelf Life
Cartridge Type
Genuine or OEM (Original) Cartridges Remanufactured Cartridges Compatible Cartridges
Description OEM stands for original equipment manufacturer, meaning the cartridge was made by the same company that made your printer. Original brand cartridges are very reliable and sometimes the only option if your printer is new to market or uncommon. Remanufactured ink is a genuine brand cartridge that has gone through one cycle of use. After use, the cartridge is recycled, acquired by a remanufacturing facility and put through a rigorous professional refurbishing process. During the refurbishing process the cartridge is disassembled, thoroughly cleaned and tested for quality. It's then carefully refilled, tested again and brought back to life. Buying remanufactured prevents one less cartridge from ending up in a landfill. A compatible cartridge is a brand new ink cartridge built by a manufacturer other than your printer. It's like buying the generic version of the genuine brand. Most are uniquely designed to differentiate from genuine cartridges. Despite any structural difference you may notice, the cartridge will still fit in your machine and print a full yield, just like the original brand.
Price Factors Many printer manufacturers follow the razor-and-blades business model which may result in higher priced genuine cartridges. Remanufactured ink is much cheaper than the original brand ink. It's far more cost effective to refurbish a previously used cartridge than create a new OEM from scratch. Compatible ink is much cheaper than the original brand. Compatible suppliers don't have to worry about the additional costs that hinder OEMs like new printers or firmware, which lets them keep prices low.
Quality Original cartridges work extremely well and are covered under a warranty by the printer manufacturer High quality remanufactured ink will match the quality of the original, but not all remanufactured ink is created equal. Make sure you buy from a reputable supplier in order to get the absolute best results. High quality compatible ink will match the quality of the original, but not all compatible ink is created equal. Make sure you buy from a reputable supplier in order to get the absolute best results.
What's the difference between ink and toner cartridges?
Ink Cartridges Toner Cartridges
Printer Type Work with inkjet printers Work with laser printers
Material Liquid ink Dry powder
How it works Inkjet printers use a series of nozzles that spray tiny drops of ink directly on the print suface Laser toner printers use static electricity and heat to bond dry toner powder to a page
Commonly used by Casual home users, small business and photographers Large businesses and schools
Number of Pages You Can Print A cartridge's page yield is the estimated number of pages you can print. Page yield is based on 5% page coverage. This means that the quoted page yield is based upon printed pages where only 5% of the page has been imprinted with ink. For example, a short memo has approximately 5% coverage. If you have a cartridge that has a yield of 500 pages, it can print 500 pages of that short memo. If you are printing letters, photos or graphics, your coverage will vary greatly and your page yield will drop significantly.
Cartridge Warranty and Shelf Life Most ink and toner cartridges include a warranty or "best by" date on their box. Remanufactured and compatible ink cartridges can last 12-18 months unopened, and toner cartridges can last up to 3 years.
Cartridge Care and Storage Only open a cartridge when you need it. Opened cartridges will eventually dry out, especially if the protective tape or clip has been removed. If you have an open ink cartridge around and would like to try and prevent it from drying out, place it nozzle side up in a plastic airtight tub. If your cartridge came with protective tape or a clip reapply both before storing. Place a damp cloth or paper towel in the tub, next to the cartridge and keep it stored in a cool, dark place.
