Best HP® Printers with Long Lasting Ink

Whether you are shopping for your home or office, buying an HP® printer that uses ink efficiently is the best way to lower your printing costs.  Finding one, however, can be challenging when there are so many different printer models to choose from.

In a nutshell, HP printers with long lasting ink should be able to print a lot of pages at a low cost per page. In this guide, we’ll review our top three picks  so you can find a printer that saves on ink and saves money.

Pro Tip: The number of pages you can print with an HP cartridge can vary, so when you are comparing printer models, pay close attention to what cartridges the printers use.  With most HP printers, the cheaper the printer, the less efficient the printer cartridges will be.  If you are looking for a printer that uses long lasting cartridges, expect to pay more for the printer.

The printers we include here are not the cheapest that HP has to offer but they do offer a far better long term value thanks to their cost efficient cartridges.

What are the best HP printers with long lasting ink?

We elaborate on why we chose these printer models below.

If you need an inkjet printer that’s affordable and reliable, the HP OfficeJet Pro 9015 is the perfect choice.  It has all of the basic features you’d expect to see in a home office printer, including print / copy / scan / fax functionality and a 35-page automatic document feeder that easily handles large stacks of pages.  At 22 ppm, prints speeds are fast too and a handy self-healing Wi-Fi feature detects and repairs connection issues automatically.  The HP 962 ink cartridges it uses are one of HP’s most efficient ink series, which is why this printer is our top pick.  Cartridges are available in black and color in standard yield or high yield sizes and a standalone extra high yield black cartridge is also available for printer users that print a lot of text.

The HP Officejet Pro 8025 is the least expensive printer on our list and the best option for casual home printing.  Print, scan, copy and fax features come standard and a two-sided document feeder makes it easy to print on both sides of the page.  It’s also speedy, clocking at 20 ppm / black and 10 ppm / color.  Four individual ink cartridges are available in a couple of different sizes but if you want print a lot, go for the higher yield cartridge options.  The HP 910 standard yield cartridges are best for occasional printing and the 910XL high yield are better for frequent use.  To get the most value (and the longest lasting prints) a 916XXL extra high yield black ink cartridge is also available and prints 5X more than the standard black cartridge.  HP does not make extra high yield color cartridges for this series.

Best Ink Tank Printer

If you are really serious about making your ink go further, an ink tank printer is the way to go.  Ink tank printers are a new type of inkjet printer that uses ink bottles and a refillable ink tank system to power your printer.  Yes, the printers are expensive but the money you save on ink costs with the ink bottles make the high sticker price worth it.   In fact, the bottles are far more efficient than any conventional HP ink cartridge and can print thousands of pages for pennies on the dollar.  HP currently offers two SmartTank printers, the SmartTank Plus 551 and the SmartTank Plus 651.  Both use the same exact ink bottles, so no matter which one you choose you are going to get the same long term ink value.  Where they differ is their printing features.  After comparing the two, we think it’s better to pay a little more for the 651 because it has more to offer (like a touchscreen display and automatic document feeder) and honestly just isn’t as clunky to operate compared to the entry level 551.

HP SmartTank Plus 651 – Buy on Amazon

HP SmartTank Plus 651

The HP SmartTank Plus 651 is a mid-range ink tank printer that includes print / copy / scan / fax functions and super generous ink bottles that keep your office running uninterrupted.   With the HP 32XL black bottle printing up to 6,000 pages and each 31 color ink bottle printing 8,000 pages, you get an incredible amount of ink and best of all, the bottles are cheap, which means printing costs stay low.  While the ink bottles are clearly the biggest draw, the printer does have a few shortcomings that are worth noting.  First off, the display screen is small and in monochrome, which is surprising for any modern printer – even most cheap inkjets today have a color display.  Second, the lackluster print speed.  At just 11 ppm in black and a meager 5 ppm in color, big print jobs can be time consuming.  Regardless, users that are laser focused on long lasting ink should be able to overlook these points and find satisfaction in the ink savings.

What We Like

High volume ink bottles – HP’s SmartTank ink bottle prints thousands of pages

Super low operating costs – The ink bottles are cheap too, making this SmartTank one of HP’s most ink efficient printers ever.

What We Don’t Like

The printer is expensiveFor the privilege of using cost effective ink bottles, you have to pay more for the printer

Small display screen – The tiny monochrome display ages this printer about five years.

Wireless only set up –  Forget about your trusted USB printer cable.  HP only lets you set up this printer over a wireless network which can be annoying if you have a spotty wifi connection.

Slow print speeds –  (11 ppm / black and 5 ppm / color)

  • You are still my choice.
I buy for my home printer which is an 8600 HP. Cartridges last a very long time at home even though my wife loves to copy the Recipe pages in her Women’s magazines at full size and in living color!
I have gone through a 8600 Premium (Print head went bad after 3 years), An HP 8710 which I still use as a fax machine although it now has a streak that cleaning doesn’t fix.
I am now using an Epson ET3760 tank model. The ink may last forever! It doesn’t fax, which is a drawback.
All my ink comes from LD. Your people have been great to work with and with an HP upgrade problem which caused my cartridges not to work anymore they were on-the-spot with perfect assistance and replacement cartridges immediately!

    • Thanks for the kind words Charles, glad to have you as a customer!!

  • Question I’m looking to buy printer based on ink prices. Do they make printer that’s true and doesn’t like just to get me to buy more ink. ? Do the separate ink cartridge colors if printer take 4 cartridges, print if one is out can u just replace one that is low ? What printers do that? Do you know ?

    • Hi Diana, what type of printing do you normally do and how often do you print? There are lots of printers that use individual ink cartridges for all four colors, which can be replaced as needed. The HP Officejet Pro 8025 or the OfficeJet Pro 9025 are a couple of HP options that use four individual cartridges. Hope this helps!
