How to Install HP 67 Ink Cartridges

HP 67 Ink Cartridges at a Glance

The HP 67 cartridge series consists of two cartridges, a black and tri-color.  Cartridges are available in a standard yield and a high yield or XL size.  The HP 67 black ink cartridge uses pigment based ink, which offers a quicker dry time and is resistant to fading.  The HP 67 tri-color cartridge ink contains all three colors (cyan, magenta and yellow) and uses dye-based ink, which produces vibrant photo prints.

How long does HP 67 ink last?

• The HP 67 standard yield black cartridge prints approximately 120 pages.
• The HP 67 standard yield tri-color cartridge prints approximately 100 pages.
• The HP 67XL high yield black cartridge prints approximately 240 pages.
• The HP 67XL tri-color cartridge prints approximately 200 pages.

Keep in mind, the quoted cartridge page yield is an estimate and is based on 5% page coverage, or prints in which 5% of the page is covered with ink. Meaning, if you were to only print on 5% of the page, you will receive the full-page yield. If you are printing half to full pages or full color pages or photos, you can expect the page count to decrease.

What is the difference between HP 67 and HP 67XL ink?

The main difference between the HP 67 and the HP 67XL cartridges is the amount of ink that is inside.  They are the same size and install in your printer the exact same way, but the XL cartridges contain more ink.  Since the standard yield cartridges do not contain very much ink, we recommend going with the high yield cartridges.  Not only do you get more prints with the XL, but operating costs are actually lower too.  Yes, the standard yield cartridges are less expensive, but when you compare cost per page, the high yield cartridges are a better value.  Let’s take the 67 black standard yield and 67XL high yield cartridges as an example.  The 67 standard yield retails for $17.81* and prints up to 120 pages.  The 67XL version goes for $20.99 and prints up to 240 pages.  To calculate cost per page, just divide the price by the number of pages.

HP 67 standard yield black cartridge cost per page:

$17.81 / 120 pages = .13 or 13 cents per page

HP 67XL high yield black cartridge cost per page:

$20.99 / 240 pages = .099 or 9.9 cents per page

The 67 standard yield’s cost per page is 13 cents, while the high yield cartridge 9.9 cents – so it is cheaper to print with the high yield AND you get more ink!

Yes, you need both cartridges installed to operate your printer and cartridges can be replaced individually as needed!

How to Install HP 67 Ink Cartridges

Now that you know all about the cartridges, we will walk you through the installation process step by step. In this guide, we will be reviewing the installation steps using the HP ENVY 6055 printer, but the steps are similar if you own any of the other compatible printers we listed at the beginning of the article.

Take the new cartridge out of the box and remove the plastic wrap.  Then grab a trash can for the next step, as some ink may escape from the cartridge during this step.

Pull off the orange tape on the side of the cartridge and throw it away. This exposes the vent hole on the side of the cartridge so it can function properly in your printer.

While you are preparing the cartridge, try to avoid touching the gold contact points.  If fingerprint oil or residue gets on these contacts you may get a faulty reading in your printer.  You can clean the contact points with a lint-free cloth.

Open up the top cover and wait for the cartridges to center, then lift up on the latch that is cradling the cartridge and gently pull out the cartridge to remove it from the printer.

Then, slide the new cartridge into that empty slot and pull the latch back over the cartridge so it is secure.

Close up the top cover and wait a few moments for the printer to initialize.  Now you can start printing!
