Best Printers of 2023 at a Glance

What are you looking for in a printer?

Before you start your search, take a moment to map out what sort of features you are looking for.  Do you need to print in black and color?  Or will a monochrome printer work just fine?  Whatever printer you decide on will influence how much you’ll spend on operating costs, including printer cartridges, so you want to settle on a machine that matches your most common printing needs.  Don’t just think about what you want print, consider how often you print too!  Ink cartridges are great for casual home users and small offices, but can often dry out if they aren’t used regularly.  Toner cartridges are best suited for high volume print jobs and won’t dry out if seldom used.  To learn more, check out our blog article on the difference between ink and toner!

How much do you want to spend on printer cartridges?

Don’t let the replacement cost of the printer cartridges be an afterthought.  They are the one component of the printer you replace regularly, and as such, should be one of your first considerations when you are shopping for a new printer!  To get the best value, seek out a printer that uses cartridges with a low cost per page.  Cost per page is how much it costs to print a single page and it is determined by dividing the cartridge cost by the cartridge’s page yield.  Page yield is the approximate number of pages you can print with a specific cartridge, and yield can vary from cartridge to cartridge.  Cartridge costs vary quite a bit across printer models too.  With so many variables, how often you have to replace your ink and how much you spend on those replacements can be very different depending on what cartridges your printer uses.  Let’s examine the operating costs of a couple different cartridges to demonstrate.  Both the HP 64XL black cartridge and the Brother LC103XL black cartridge print the same number of pages (600) but their cartridge costs are miles apart.  HP sells an original 64XL for $45.99* and Brother’s LC103XL is $20.49.  If you calculate cost per page for both, HP comes in at 7.6 cents a page while Brother is just 3.4 cents.

How to save even more on printing costs…

Compatible alternative printer cartridges are a great way to cut your printing costs down even further. Manufactured to the highest standards of quality, you get comparable page yield and print results to the original, for a fraction of the price! Let’s reexamine those HP 64XL and Brother LC103 cartridges with LD pricing.  A compatible HP 64XL cartridge sells for $22.99 at a cost per page of 3.8 cents and the compatible Brother sells for $5.99 at a cost per page of .99 cents.  As you can see, cost per page has a major influence on your overall operating costs and compatible ink can bring that number down dramatically. Take the time to calculate those costs upfront before committing to a printer, you’ll be glad you did.

Best Ink Tank Printer

Epson EcoTank ET-2720Buy on Amazon

Who should buy this printer: Home offices and small-businesses that print frequently in black and color and are tired of using an inkjet printer with dried out cartridges!

Notable Features: Ink tank printers, like the Epson Ecotank ET-2720 featured here, have grown in popularity in recent years and it’s easy to see why.  Instead of using ink cartridges, your printer stores the ink in a refillable tank, which can hold enough ink to print thousands of pages before it requires a refill.  Most ink tank printers use ink bottles for the refilling process and compared to the average cartridge, they are much more affordable and print a lot more too.  The only downside – expect to pay a bit more for the printer itself.  Since ink tank technology is still relatively new, printer manufacturers can charge a premium for you to be able to use it, so your upfront printer costs will be a bit more expensive than most inkjet printers.  However, the amount you save in ink alone may be worth that added cost!

This Ecotank has all of the basic features you’d expect to see in a home printer, including print / copy / scan functionality.  Print speeds are a little slow compared to an Epson inkjet printer, with black prints coming in at 10.5 pp, and color prints at 5 ppm.  An ink tank display on the front of the machine lets you instantly track your ink levels.  The printer is also wireless ready!

Ink Bottle Costs: This printer uses the Epson 522 ink bottle series, which are available in black, cyan, magenta and yellow.  The black ink bottle contains enough ink to print 4,500 pages  and each color bottles prints 6,000 pages.  That’s an incredibly low cost per page compared to the average ink cartridge, which will save you a bundle on operating costs! To save even more, check out LD’s compatible versions of the 522 ink bottle series.  Our ink bottles are just $7.99 each!

Advanced options like automatic 2-sided printing and toner save mode reduce printing costs and save paper.

Cartridge Costs: Brother sells two different toner cartridges for this machine. The TN730 standard yield cartridge prints 1,200 pages and goes for $42.99.  The TN760 high yield cartridge is $76.99 and prints 3,000 pages.  LD compatible cartridges are a great way to save even more.  You can buy our LD brand TN760 for $34.99.  This printer also uses a drum unit, which generally needs to be replaced after the use of 3-4 toners.  An LD compatible drum is also $31.99!

    • I seek color HP 62xl cartridge.

I seek also method on extending life of printer from HP’s malware. The machine works fine then an automatic update occurs and the printer begins to have issues suggesting that a new printer is needed.

    • Hello …

Need a printer for my household use and projects. Am tired of replacement cartridges. Have been buying form LD for an epson printer and with cleaning, it still does not print anything decent.

So… Color laser (Brother HL L3230CDW– how long will toner last? does $35.99 include all colors? And black is separate?

      Phyllis

      • Hi Phyllis! The HL-L3230CDW printer uses Brother TN227 cartridges. One compatible Brother TN227 cartridge costs 35.99 each (compare with an original Brother TN227 black priced at $72.99/cartridge). A toner set that has all colors and black costs $139.96. A TN227 black prints approximately 3,000 pages so as to how long it will print will depend how many pages you print in a day or week. The lesser number of pages you print daily, the longer the cartridges will last. Let me know if there’s anything else I can help you with!

    • Oops .. to continue with the previous
      I need an all-in-one printer …

      Brother HL L3230CDW or
Cannon all in one … but cartridges are only good for 1.5 ream of paper?

      Phyllis

    • Personally the Epson Workforce 7710 is the best all in one printer I’ve had. The 252XL cartridges are widely available and work very well economically.

    • If you do not print much or often, laser may be your best bet. Inkjet cartridges can dry out and become useless through lack of use, even though there is a lot of ink sitting unused — and unusable — in the cartridge.

    • Need printer for home use. Very seldom need color, but my HP OfficeJet cleans the color jets even when color is not called for and thus uses/wastes color ink. Does the Cannon do the same? Any better alternative?

      • Hi Bill, most printers go through an automatic cleaning process if they have been sitting idle for a while so the printheads don’t dry out. Whether you own an HP or a Canon, you would be dealing with the same issue. To avoid this, we recommend printing weekly to keep your cartridges primed at all times, all it has to be is a short email or something like that to keep them going. If you don’t want to deal with cleaning the printhead you could buy a laser printer. Since laser printers use toner powder they don’t dry out like an ink cartridge and you can go for months without printing and have a working printer ready to go when needed. A good inexpensive option is the Brother HL-L 2350DW, which prints in black. We have other recommendations here: https://www.ldproducts.com/blog/buying-guide-whats-the-best-laser-printer-for-you/

    • For the HP OfficeJet 8025, you indicate that your remanufactured cartridges will be “coming soon”. When is that? I’ve been waiting for well over 6 months for you to announce cartridges for my OfficeJet 9015, which you also say are “coming soon”.

After such a long wait, I am concerned that HP has installed software in the printer and/or cartridges that you are not and will not be able to duplicate. I’ve contacted Customer Service, and they are not able to provide any information about when they will be available, if ever.

HP’s practice of preventing use of remanufactured inkjet cartridges is anticompetitive, and I would hope that you will be able to seek a legal remedy.

Please let us know what the you plans are for these and similar printers. Thanks!!

    • Do you supply ink for all those?

    • I am looking for printer that can fax, copy and scan and obviously print in black and colour.

      Which one do you recommend.

      • Hi Sandro, the HP OfficeJet 8025 or the Canon PIXMA TR-8520 in this article are two good options!
