HP Printer Types

HP has a wide range of inkjet and laser printers. Most popular inkjet printers belong to the OfficeJet, DeskJet, and ENVY line of printers. HP PhotoSmart is HP's line of specialty photo inkjet printers for those looking for a higher level of photo quality (though HP stopped producing PhotoSmart printers years ago). The HP LaserJet series is HP's line of laser printers with a variety of models that cater to home users, small businesses, and large-scale offices.

Home Inkjet Printers

HP's OfficeJet line of printers is probably the most purchased for home use. Some of the popular printer models are: HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 - HP Envy 4500 - HP Envy 4520 - HP OfficeJet 4650 - HP OfficeJet 6500 - HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 - HP OfficeJet 7612 - HP OfficeJet Pro 8720

Which is the best HP inkjet printer for home use?

The HP OfficeJet 3830, OfficeJet Pro 8710, OfficeJet Pro 6978, OfficeJet 4650, and the OfficeJet 5255 are some of the popular models. All these models are all-in-one printers which offer scan and copy capabilities.

What is the best HP all-in-one wireless inkjet printer?

Popular HP inkjets that are both multifunction and wireless are the HP OfficeJet 3830, OfficeJet Pro 8710, OfficeJet Pro 6978, OfficeJet 4650, and the OfficeJet 5255. What's best for you really depends on your printing load, frequency, and budget.

Business Inkjet Printers

HP's newer OfficeJet printer models have faster print speeds built for office environments that require higher print volumes. For example, the HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 All-in-One printer prints up to 24 pages per minute of black and white documents, 20 pages per minute of documents with color, faster than other most inkjet printers

The HP PageWide printer line was specially engineered to have a printhead that spans the entire width of the paper so it doesn't have to go side to side everytime. This new technology greatly reduces print speeds that suit fast-paced work environments.

Laser Printers

HP has a very wide range of laser printers designed to accommodate small to super high volumes of print jobs. This makes the LaserJet printer line versatile for both home and office use. Monochrome and color laser printers are available.

Which is the best HP printer for office use?

The best HP printer model that's best for your office will depend on the type of documents you print the most. If you print mostly documents and don't need anything printed in color then a high volume monochrome laser printer should suffice. However, if you do need color, then choose a color LaserJet printer. Of course, it will have to be an all-in-one laser printer model.

What's a good HP LaserJet monochrome printer?

A good monochrome HP LaserJet printer for your home office is the HP LaserJet P2055dn and the newer HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M506n Laser Printer with Built-in Ethernet. The M506n toner cartridge can print more pages than the cartridge for a P2055dn.

What's a good HP Color LaserJet printer?

For color laser printing, check out the HP Color LaserJet MFP M281fdw printer. Color laser printers need four toner cartridges to work: one black, one cyan, one magenta, and one yellow.

What ink does my HP printer use?

To identify what cartridge name your printer uses, simply lift the scanner unit open to expose your printer's cartridge tray. The cartridge tray will slide to the center and will stop when it's ok for you to remove the cartridges. Take out the ink cartridge from the tray and locate the label. The name of your printer's cartridge should be easily visible.

HP cartridges have two names: the part number and the short name. Take the HP 64 cartridge for instance, the short name for the HP 64 is "HP 64", the long name is "HP N9J86A". You can search for HP cartridges using either names, though the short name is easier to remember, customers usually prefer using it.

Identifying the number of cartridges your HP printer uses

Different HP printer models have different ink cartridge requirements--starting with the number of ink cartridges it needs. Most HP inkjet printer models need only two ink cartridges--black and tri-color, while some models use 4 ink cartridges (cyan, magenta, yellow, black), and specialized HP photo printers use as much as 8 ink cartridges to be able to provide a wide gamut of colors and render vivid images.

What are high yield / high capacity HP printer ink cartridges?

High capacity or high yield cartridges contain more ink or toner and yield (or print) more pages than their standard cartridge counterparts. They have higher page yields--in other words, they print a higher number of pages. Enjoy a lower cost per page and run out of ink much later with high yield genuine or compatible HP ink or toner cartridges.

What's the difference between XL and regular HP ink cartridges?

XL cartridges are high yield ink cartridges that contain more ink and can print more pages than a regular standard HP ink cartridge. If you print a lot regularly, you can save more money by opting to use high yield or XL ink cartridges.

How long does an HP ink cartridge last?

How long an HP ink cartridge lasts depends on the amount of ink in the cartridge and what you print as well as how often.

All cartridges come with ISO predetermined page yields based on the amount of ink there is in a cartridge. For example, an HP 952 black ink cartridge contains 23.5 ml of pigment-based ink and prints up to 1,000 pages. An HP 63 black cartridge, on the other hand, contains only 3.5ml of pigment-based ink and prints up to 190 pages.

Paying attention to how much ink is contained in a printer's cartridge can help a lot when shopping for a cost-efficient HP printer.

HP Instant Ink vs Original HP Cartridges vs Compatible Alternatives

So many options, which one to pick. It really depends on your usage and your budget. If you have an inkjet printer and you don't print all that often, it's better to have a limited amount of ink rather than buying cartridges in bulk as ink in cartridges tend to dry up. Original HP or compatible alternatives? Depends on your budget. HP inkjet printers tend to run out of ink often so you should expect to replace cartridges often so printing with your HP printer gets expensive pretty quickly. By using compatible HP cartridges, you save money and stay productive with an uninterrupted printing schedule.

Troubleshooting Common HP Printer Cartridge Issues

Clogged Cartridges or Printhead

A common problem with HP printers is a clogged printhead or dried up ink. Here are some things you can do to prevent ink clogs.

One way to clean printead clogs is by running your printer's automatic printhead cleaning feature. This is usually found under the "printer maintenance" section in your printer's LED menu. If the colors still don't look good, you can run the printhead cleaning a second time. If you find that this is not doing much to improve print quality, we suggest you resort to manual cleaning.

This manual cleaning method is called the paper towel method and can be done on both printheads that are built into the printer and on printheads that are built into the cartridge. Remove the cartridges from the printhead, and then remove the printhead from the printer and set them on a damp paper towel to melt any dried up ink in the nozzles. Seeing ink on the paper towels is a good sign that the clog is loosening up. Reinstall everything again to test if the print quality improves. If it still doesn't, do it again.

HP Printer Won't Print

If your HP printer won't print and you're sure it's not because of a clogged printhead or empty cartridges, there are two possibilities: your contacts are dirty, or you need to reinstall your printer driver.

To clean the contacts on your ink cartridges, remove the ink cartridges and wipe the contacts with a dry lint free cloth. Reinstall and see if this fixes the problem. Otherwise, try reinstalling your printer driver.

You can also try a hard reset on your printer. To do a hard reset, make sure your printer is powered on. Try to print something then pull your printer's power cord from the outlet. Disconnect the power cable from your printer. Wait a few seconds then plug the cables back to your printer. Turn on your printer and try printing.

If that still doesn't work, restore your printer's factory settings. You can find this option on your printer's LED screen.
If for any reason you cannot find the product you are looking for, our dedicated and knowledgeable customer service team is standing by to assist you. Just call 888-321-2552.
